Wooden plate turned on my pole lathe.
the rim on this one is carved into a star shape like the 9th century Luebeck Star bowls and plates.
This is ca 19cm size plate turned from quarter sawn Alder. The tree stood somewhere in Edhinburgh and I only got a small piece of the massive trunk. Must have been a rather old and large tree for an Alder. It was big enough to try to turn plates from the quarter log, something I had in mind for a while. Because of the shape and age I was a bit restricted as to how many I could cut from that log. I got 12 out of that one half log! So, although some a perfectly quarter sawsn, some a slightly off and did a tiny bit of warping and ever so slight uneven base as a result. This is a lovely feature and makes it rather authentic.
Authentic and useable woodware.
Living history and re-enactors love these as they are properly turned on a tradtional, foot powered lathe. No sandpaper or any other cheats to make it look polished.
All plates are turned to a high quality standart that I love to maintain with all my work.
