A lovely nest of four plates turned from one half log of Sycamore. The tree stood in a woodland near Wastwater, my favorite lake in the Lake District. The nest was turned in my workshop in Kielder on my traditional pole-lathe.
I turn them from green wood and re turn them after drying out to make sure teh wobble you can get on plates is kept to a minimum. Of course, you could use quarter sawn wood but more often than not it is hard to get a tree big enough and it is a wasteful approach. My approach means a minimum of wood goes to waste and you can make nests. SOmething you cannot do with quartersawn.
Every nest is totally unique and this log was large enough to make four plates. They start from 30cm and it goes down to around 22.
