Nested Horse Chestnut Salad or Fruit bowl with authentic repair in Luebeck Star style.
This is a large bowl turned from a piece of uniquely marked Horse Chesnut. It developed cracks on the rim whilst turning and I decided to go for repair rather than throwing it out. I stapled the crack with hand-made copper staples on the inside and outside of the rim. This is a time consuming process but one that was done extensively in the old days when our society had different agenda about the objects we owned and used. You will find numerous museum pieces with repair work. I really enjoy the process and find the bowls almost irresistable as the repair makes them even more unique.
28cm wide , samll one is 14cm
Large bowls like this are always one-off items and take a good while to turn on the pole-lathe. They make excellent salad or fruit bowls that will sit beautifully as a centre piece on any table.
This is a nest of two bowls. The bowl was challenging to turn due to very different densities of the wood. I am not sure why the lighter bits are softer and the darker so much harder but it meant a lot of chatter on my tool which made the tool marks stand out more.
Wash with luke warm water.
Do not put it into microwave or dishwasher.
