Turned from birch on my foot-powered bowl lathe.
This birch bowl is the last one of the set of birch bowls. It features two beads as decoration and has a rusitc finish. I emphasised the tool grooves on this one resulting in a textured finished with the toolmarks clearly dectectable. I like the feel it produced when you handle it. It speaks of hand-made quality. It also has some bark left on the outside wall. It would fit nicely into any rucksack or is equally great for any camping enthusiast who like to go natural.
Turned on my foot powered lathe in just the same way as turners of the old days would have produced their bowls. I love to keep alive the technique and history of this style of production which is like an antithesis to modern mass production.
This one has a flat base and two decorative bead as found on many Viking/ Saxon/ Norman bowls as well as on some medivial bowls.
