You found my place. I hope to inspire you with what I do.
it started many years ago...
...and withstood the test of time
I am a professional pole-lathe bowl turner producing some of the finest quality wooden bowls and plates. This traditional skill has withstood the test of time and although it is on the list of the 'endangered crafts', experiences a surge of interest recently. It takes many years to master the technique. Honing the skill never ends. Patience and time is needed to improve the quality and speed of the process and to forge useable tools. To pass on the skill to others is a joy. Although I am called 'the reluctant businesman' I also love to sell what I produce. In that way I can bring the beauty of hand-crafted work into your home and daily life.
Based in a workshop-studio in the midst of Kielder Forest in Northumberland. The nights here are spectecular, btw.....
I always had a passion for the crafts and loved making things from wood from an early age. I believe my father had something to do with this and I have the best memories of us roaming somewhere along riversides and finding bits and pieces of wood that we carved into. I am particularily keen on traditional bowl turning techniques and have specialised in turning usable and authentic wooden bowls and plates. I follow a twofold approach, turning reproduction pieces and replicas for reenactors and living history and turning as a modern craftsman producing sustainble wooden vessels for everyday life.
I also hand carve spoons, as well as producing bespoke wooden clocks with inlaid hour markers and hands.
For the kitchen and table, I make a variety of chopping boards, as well as spatulas and coasters, in addition to other gift ideas, such as Celtic style wooden pendants and wooden Christmas decorations.
I also offer experience days on the pole lathe for up to three people, for those of you keen to enjoy learning a beautiful heritage craft, and go home with your own bowl.
